Ignorance is Bliss

You’ve heard people say it. You’ve probably even said it yourself.

Here’s the thing though. Ignorance is anything but bliss. Ignorance is intelligence ignored.

You know what’s bliss? A very low IQ is bliss. If you have a very low capacity for new knowledge you will be unable to comprehend what’s going on around you. That’s bliss.

If, on the other hand, you understand what’s going on around you and choose to ignore it you are ignore-ant. (I know. That’s really bad.) But insects and other non-sentient beings are lucky. They live in a small and simple world. We humans, on the other hand, exist in a very big and complex world. These days, rational minds cannot afford to avoid the evil that’s going on all around us. And yes, I do mean politics and religion, the things we “don’t talk about in polite company.”

Rachel Naomi Remen says: “The Buddhists talk about samsara, the world of illusion. It is the place that most of us live. Mistaking illusion for reality is said to be the root cause of our suffering.”

I think the Buddhists are right. What do you think?
